Glen vs San Jose, 2004
Ten Best: In memory of San Jose
December 21, 2005

Despite San Jose playing in the West, the MetroStars and the Clash-then-Quakes have shared a number of interesting moments in the past ten years. And with the league moving the team to Houston, we look back at that history, which might or might not be renewed after expansion.

  • 10) August 29, 1997: MetroStars 3, San Jose 0
The MetroStars get an easy win over the Clash, with a goal from Roberto Donadoni and two from Giovanni Savarese.

  • 9) June 13, 2005: San Jose GM Alexi Lalas named Metro GM
In a surprising move whose full repercussions are yet to be seen, Nick Sakiewicz gets "promoted out" and his spot is filled by San Jose GM, Lalas. And a few months later, San Jose is no more.

  • 8) June 28, 2000: MetroStars 0, San Jose 0
A rather forgettable scoreless tie is remembered for one thing: it was Tim Howard's first pro shutout, the first of many to come.

  • 7) January 20, 1999: MetroStars trade Marcelo Vega and Raul Diaz Arce to San Jose for future considerations
On the same day Savarese was shipped out for Diaz Arce, the Metros use the old (but back then, new) "trade for future considerations" trick in getting rid of the fat and useless Marcelo Vega.

  • 6) July 28, 1996: MetroStars 4, San Jose 1
With Carlos Queiroz's Metro firing on all cylinders, Peter Vermes and Rhett Harty score their lone league goals for the club, and Donadoni sets a club record with three assists.

  • 5) July 2, 2003: MetroStars 4, San Jose 4
1:0, 1:2, 3:2, 3:3 as it goes into injury time and Clint Mathis scores his second to give Metro the lead. But Metro players celebrate too much and Landon Donovan scores straight off the kickoff to level it again.

  • 4) February 26, 1996: MetroStars acquire Rhett Harty from San Jose for Troy Dayak
The first trade in MLS history gives Metro Harty, a fan favorite even years after his playing career is over.

  • 3) May 8, 2004: San Jose 5, MetroStars 5
The game had it all, as Cornell Glen, Fabian Taylor, and Joselito Vaca all score on long blasts as the game was tied at halftime. But after San Jose scored two early in the second, a penalty kick from Amado Guevara and then a 90-minute back-heel from Glen evened out the goal-fest.

  • 2) October 5, 2003: San Jose 0, MetroStars 2
The Metros play a perfect road game, defeating a formidable Quake team to clinch a playoff berth, with Guevara scoring the winner. The game is marked by Donovan hacking down Guevara and Jonny Walker, and then bitching after the game. Oh, the Golden Boy of US soccer...

  • 1) April 25, 1998: MetroStars 4, San Jose 3
Down two early on, Metros score the next three, only for Eddie Lewis to level it in the 77th. But with 11 seconds left, Lalas takes a pass from Vega (who was making his debut), and rolls it into the Clash net to give Metro the win.
